The modified endoscopic pre-lacrimal approach: how I do it

Leslie T. Koh, Rataphol C. Dhepnorrarat

Abstract

Background: The pre-lacrimal approach to the maxillary sinus has previously been described in the literature. We propose a modification to the existing technique, to improve surgical outcomes and decrease morbidity.
Methods: A retrospective review of seven patients who underwent the modified technique was identified. Surgical complications and patient outcomes were evaluated.
Results: The modified pre-lacrimal approach was successful in treating all seven patients with minimal morbidity.
Conclusions: The modified pre-lacrimal approach provides excellent visualization of all surfaces in the maxillary sinus. It maintains normal lateral nasal wall bony anatomy, reduces manipulation of the nasolacrimal duct, and thus decreases the risk of potential complications.
